Barn Jam
I found this image in Communication Arts magazine. It was designed by Gil Shuler. I really like the color choices. At first I thought it was just an ad for jam, but then I realized it was actually designed for an event which, I thought was pretty cool.

WATERMAG
This is a layout from Watermag Surf News. I was intrigued by the use of black and white photos and light colors. Most magazines only use bright photos. The black and white makes it stand out from the rest. The function of this article is to announce the latest news in the surfing world. A serif font is used for the body paragraphs, but sans serif font is used for the headings. The use of grids is very easily noticed in the design of the layout, and the use of white space helps everything flow together.

Danny Clinch
I found this layout in Communication Arts. This article is about famous rock photographer, Danny Clinch. The function of the layout is to display Clinch's photos. This was particularly appealing to me because of the large photos used throughout the article and how they are laid out. Instead of scaling the photos down and adding text with them, the layout makes the photo stand out by themselves. The text is very nice and clean. The article is written with serif type and it uses sans serif type for the title, lead in, and side bars. The layout has very good balance and structure. The colors are well chosen for emphasis and match the pictures. White space is used to show the whole picture, instead of blowing the whole picture up and making it fill the page.
